For the last several years
Seaholme has welcomed a number of Japanese student teachers from
Nagoya University. The university is located 264km west of Tokyo.
These students are studying Child Education at university and the
study tour provides them with a teaching experience, observing the
western way of teaching methods and school systems and improves
their English skills as they introduce Japanese culture to
Australian children. They have been coming to Hobson's Bay area for
the last 3 years and Seaholme has been a regular hosting school. Our
school families volunteer and open their homes to our visitors for
about 2 weeks. This has proved to be an enriching experience for
both the Japanese students and the children's families. Families
take the opportunity to showcase our state and many of the tourist
attractions we have to offer while the students themselves become
the tourists and expand their knowledge of our western society.
The Japanese students plan a
Cultural Day at the school as part of their "teaching" experience.
Seaholme students & staff are invited to dress in traditional or
themed Japanese character as our visitors instruct all day teaching
such things as Japanese calligraphy, traditional games and Japanese
celebrations. Their visit culminates with a "thankyou" concert at
the Williamstown Town Hall to show their appreciation to their host
families and schools.
